В края на XIX век, възниква един стил, който прониква и обхваща всички изкуства - сецесион. С него възниква и идеята чрез красотата да се промени ежедневието на обикновения човек, да се създаде синтез между изящно и приложно.
Името, което се превръща в емблема на сецесион, е Алфонс Муха (Alfons Maria Mucha, Alphonse - 1860-1939). Роден в малкото градче Иванчице, днешна Чехия, Муха пробва да кандидатства в художествената академия в Прага, но е обявен за бездарен. По-късно съдбата го отвежда в Париж, където започва работа като художник на реклами и илюстратор на списания.
Обратът идва в края на 1894, когато Муха е натоварен с нелека поръчка – за няколко дни да изработи афиш на постановката Жизмонда с участието на Сара Бернар в Театъра на Ренесанса. Изработеният за една вечер плакат бил с нестандартен формат - тесен и висок, а Жизмонда - цялата в бяло. Именно този плакат прави Муха известен с нов стил в изкуството, наречен по-късно ар нуво. Много художници започват да го имитират, но никой не постига неговия завиден усет към детайла и гъстата орнаментировка.
